    Polestar

The Polestar name was initially applied to high performance Volvos that had reinforced and modified engine, suspension, and interior upgrades, akin to BMW M, Lexus F, and Mercedes-Benz AMG cars. The name has been recast to serve as Volvo’s sub-brand for electric cars and plug-in hybrids. The $155,000 Polestar 1 luxury coupe was the first model; it featured a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a gasoline engine driving the front wheels and two electric motors spinning the rear wheels. The combined output of the engine and motors is 600 horsepower. The Polestar 2, an all-electric hatchback, offers a driving range of 249 miles. It failed to impress us in our testing, delivering a bone-jarring ride, tight interior, and confusing controls. The upcoming midsized Polestar 3 SUV will expand the electric-only brand's portfolio. It’s packed with luxury features and safety equipment, and it offers a cruising range from about 270 to 300 miles.
