Chances are, if you’re shopping for a mattress, you’re researching the pros and cons of a range of brands and models. But the truth is, where you shop for your mattress can also have an impact on your search for good sleep. After all, your choice of retailer determines whether you have a range of options to choose from, how knowledgeable the salesperson is, and how easy it is to return or exchange the mattress if you don’t like it.

That’s why the insights attained by Consumer Reports’ Mattress Retailers Survey can be so helpful. Our latest survey of more than 6,000 CR members who bought a new mattress between 2022 and the first quarter of 2023 includes feedback about their recent mattress-buying experiences, both online and in-store.

Members dished about retailers’ mattress selection, sales service, and customer support, as well as whether floor models were clean and delivery was on time. For the first time since we started doing these surveys, we also added ratings for website and website usability. Using these responses, we created ratings for each of these areas for 16 retailers, including mattress-store chains, department stores, and online platforms. Each was given an Overall Score, too. We also explored pricing: how much our members paid for their mattress, how happy they were with that price, and whether they haggled—a common practice for in-store shopping but much less common with mattresses purchased online.

    More on Mattresses

Based on our survey responses, members found that buying a mattress, whether online or in a store, was a satisfying experience overall. Among the CR members surveyed, 38 percent who bought a mattress in the latest survey period made their purchase online—a drop from the 45 percent in 2020 to 2021.

In this article, we highlight the top five retailers in alphabetical order. In addition to survey details about the store, we’ve included information on a top-performing model from our ratings sold there. (If you’d like to try these models in-store, see our mattress buying guide for advice on how to assess a mattress.) CR members can read about all 17 retailers in our comprehensive mattress store ratings. They can also learn about additional mattresses offered by these sellers in our comprehensive mattress ratings, which include more than 250 models. To find the best mattress for your needs (according to budget, sleep position, and firmness preferences, for instance), explore our mattress selector.

    Denver Mattress Co.

Denver Mattress Co. sells mattresses directly to consumers via its online store and is a subsidiary of Furniture Row, which has more than 40 showrooms across the U.S. While Denver Mattress makes several of its own mattresses in its Denver factory, including the Doctor’s Choice Plush, Doctor’s Choice Euro Top, and Doctor’s Choice Hybrid Euro Top, it also sells mattresses from brands like Casper, Sealy, and Purple out of its warehouse.

The company offers a four-month trial period, with a full refund if you don’t like your mattress, as well as partial credit toward another mattress for mattresses exchanged between four and 12 months of purchase. (A delivery fee may apply to exchanges.) A mattress protector or waterproof mattress pad must be purchased along with the mattress in order for it to be eligible for the company’s 365-Day Better Sleep Guarantee. The mattress retailer lands very good ratings, for the most part, in CR’s mattress store survey. It earns a middling score for price satisfaction, however.

    Mattress Warehouse

Mattress Warehouse has been in the retail space for more than three decades, starting in Frederick, Md., in 1989 and expanding to more than 300 locations across the Eastern United States today. Each store is locally owned and operated and carries a slate of brands. Shoppers can also take advantage of the store’s nationwide shipping in the continental U.S.

In our mattress survey, CR members gave Mattress Warehouse top-notch scores in several categories. During the shopping experience, they appreciated the customer service and the selection of mattresses. Those who shopped in the store said showroom models were clean. And when it came to the delivery of their purchase, members were impressed by the retailer’s on-time delivery and felt the quality of their delivery was top-tier.

One point of contention for customers was the price they paid for their selection. Next to Sleep Number, Mattress Warehouse shoppers spent the most on their mattress purchase—$1,938 on average. Fortunately, each purchase comes with a "comfort guarantee" period that varies from up to 100 days to up to one year, depending on the manufacturer.

    Raymour & Flanigan

The high-end furniture chain has been in business since 1947. It now operates more than 130 locations throughout the Northeast, with delivery service to select locations down the East Coast.

CR members who shopped at Raymour & Flanigan were quite satisfied with their overall experience, giving the retailer very good scores for service, customer support, and selection. They were even more impressed by the store’s floor model cleanliness, on-time delivery, and the quality of the delivery. The store offers free next-day, white-glove delivery service. Mattress purchases come with a 120-day comfort guarantee when you purchase the retailer’s 5-year Platinum Protection Plan. Members spent $1,600, on average, on their purchase and gave the store a middling score for price satisfaction.

    Saatva

With just a little over a decade in the mattress market, Saatva has become a favorite among CR members. It’s just one of two retailers, the other being The Original Mattress Company, with an Overall Satisfaction score in our top ratings tier. While it’s an online company, its mattresses are delivered by movers in a truck, as opposed to rolled up and shipped in a box. Saatva earns very good marks for selection and website usability, and top marks for service, customer support, on-time delivery, quality of delivery, and web support. Members who participated in our survey paid a median purchase price of $1,723.

Saatva offers nine beds, including the Saatva Classic innerspring, Solaire adjustable mattress, Loom & Leaf memory foam, and Zenhaven latex. Though it sells mattresses mainly on its website, you can also try them out in one of its 11 showrooms across the country.

    The Original Mattress Factory

The Original Mattress Factory is the only retailer in CR’s survey to earn our top mark for six of the nine categories we rate retailers on. It excelled in sales service, customer support, and selection. And as for the cleanliness of the floor models and the quality and timeliness of the delivery service itself, CR members were extremely pleased.

While most of the retailers we evaluate have less-than-stellar scores for the price of their mattress offerings, those surveyed were actually pleased with the prices at The Original Mattress Factory. The median price paid was $1,146, making this retailer among the more budget-friendly options on our list.

The Original Mattress Factory has 119 stores and 11 factory locations spanning from the East Coast to the Midwest, but it also sells its own and other mattresses online. (See our ratings for the Original Mattress Factory Orthopedic Luxury Firm and its Serenity Latex.) Purchases come with a one-year Comfort Policy that allows customers to re-select another mattress one time within the first year of purchase for a small percentage of the selling price.
