Talking Cars 422: We Take Delivery of Our 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale
The podcast panel also discusses the powertrains in plug-in hybrids
Main theme: Alfa Romeo’s newest model is the Tonale, a compact SUV that is based on the Jeep Compass platform and shares many of its components with the new Dodge Hornet. But the Tonale stands out from its corporate siblings because it’s only available—for now—as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). We discuss the new SUV, debating its Alfa-ness, what it’s like to try to drive it fully on electricity, and where it ranks among other luxury compact SUVs.
Audience question: I’ve heard that some PHEVs let the engine kick in even if the battery is fully charged. Have you experienced this, and, if so, why does it happen?
