Ford is recalling more than 870,000 F-150 pickup trucks from the 2021 through 2023 model years because their electronic parking brakes could activate while the vehicle is in motion, which could cause drivers to lose control of the vehicle.

The issue is because of a wiring harness that could become damaged over time if it contacts the vehicle’s rear axle housing, according to documents provided by the automaker to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If this happens, drivers may also see a warning light on the dashboard and a message on the screen behind the steering wheel, both indicating a problem with the parking brake.

Over 870,000 trucks are included in the recall, which is limited to F-150s with single exhaust setups. Ford says it is aware of 918 warranty claims for parking brake issues and zero crashes or injuries that could be related to this recall.

    F-150 Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: Ford F-150 pickup trucks manufactured between Jan. 8, 2020, and Feb. 25, 2023.

The problem: The electronic parking brake system’s wiring harness could become damaged if it chafes against the vehicle’s rear axle housing. If this happens, the parking brake could inadvertently activate while the vehicle is in motion.

The fix: Ford dealerships will replace or repair the vehicle’s parking brake wiring harness, as needed. As with all recall repairs, the fix is free of charge. If the existing wiring harness is not damaged, dealerships will install protective tape and a tie strap to prevent it from chafing against the rear axle. If the existing wiring harness needs to be replaced, the new one—part number ML3Z-15K857-C or ML3Z-15K857-A—will have a plastic shield to protect it from chafing.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Ford at 866-436-7332.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V509. Ford’s own number for this recall is 23S35.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
