We tried some of the most popular brands out there—Parachute, Brooklinen, Pottery Barn, and more—so you know which ones to buy and which to skip

The bath towel is one of the most luxurious aspects of a trip to the spa or a high-end hotel. Stepping out of a steaming waterfall shower or rising up out of a cool plunge pool after a rest in a hot sauna is only made better by a soft, fluffy towel. But this experience need not be restricted to a vacation, and while your own home bathroom might not be as lavish as one at the Ritz-Carlton, you can at least replicate the bath towel side of the equation at home without taking out a mortgage to pay for a full-scale bathroom renovation.

    More Outside The Labs

That isn’t to say that it’s easy. With the surplus of options and an apparent encyclopedia of jargon, buying towels might seem even more complicated than embarking on that bathroom renovation. Wide price range, towels that feel soft in the store only to turn into sandpaper after a few washes, and towels that push water around rather than soak it up are just a few of the issues we experienced while working on this story—so you don’t have to.

We tried seven bath towels in the hopes that one of them could replicate that spa experience in the comfort of our own homes. We discovered one that’s so extravagant and soft, we could lounge in it for hours; we found others that, while not exactly hotel quality, are good budget picks; and finally, we tried a couple that don’t live up to the blaring online hype.

You’ll also find a guide to that towel world lingo in the How to Shop for a Bath Towel section below. There, you’ll learn about the differences among Egyptian cotton, Pima cotton, and Turkish cotton, what sort of difference “long-staple” cotton makes in a towel, whether or not the weight of a towel (grams per square meter, or GSM) should be a determining factor in your purchase, and more.
